Several major OLED manufacturers have unveiled new panel types this year, but LG Display says that its new 2-layer panel not only improves on color coverage, but does so at a cheaper manufacturing cost.
The company recently told Korean media that going with a 2-layer design instead of a 3- or 4-layer model has allowed it to keep costs down while improving on picture quality and delivering a wider viewing angle. According to LG, the new panel improves on current 3-stack WOLD models by covering 82.5% BT.2020 of the color gamut and slightly higher brightness, though brightness does take a slight dip at higher color temperatures.
Of the new technology, The Elec quotes an industry source as saying, “If the next-generation two-stack architecture enters mass production, LG Display will be able to defend its position in the premium segment while expanding into the mid-range TV and monitor markets, where LCD and mini-LED technologies remain dominant.”
LG says that a key development that led to the new panel design was the adoption of a “new blue emissive material” that replaced the “yellow-green emissive layer with seperate red and green layers.”
