Meta wiping all Oculus accounts March 29

Be sure to migrate your account to avoid losing your data and apps

Since Oculus was acquired by Meta (then Facebook) in 2014, users of the Oculus line of VR headsets had been allowed to keep using their Oculus accounts without a fuss until 2020, when new users started to be required to link a Facebook account or create a new one under the Meta umbrella.

That’s all about to change, so listen up if you still use an Oculus device, one of the precursors to the Meta Quest. Meta has sent out an email letting those with a registered Oculus account know that their account is slated for deletion on March 29th. This deletion includes any app purchases, any content created with the Oculus, store credits, friends lists, everything. Users are urged to visit this page to migrate their existing account to a Meta account to prevent their data from being wiped. Make sure to tell your friends with an Oculus so they can keep partying like its 2019.

Meta has announced that its line of Quest VR headsets now support spatial video playback. This comes just in time for the release of the Apple Vision Pro, whose spatial video support has been seen as a unique feature. Meta says that spatial video playback is now possible on the Meta Quest 3, Meta Quest Pro, and Meta Quest 2, but is not supported by the original model.

Spatial videos for the Quest devices can only be made on an iPhone 15 Pro or iPhone 15 Pro Max, however, though the content will not take up any storage space on the headset, as it will be stored on the cloud.

“When you put on your Meta Quest headset, simply select the spatial video content in the Files menu for an immersive viewing experience,” says Meta. “You can manage your spatial video content from either the Meta Quest mobile app gallery or in the spatial videos section of the Files menu in your headset.”

The company says they have made several spatial videos available in the Files menu of Quest headsets that support the feature, allowing users to see what the new format looks like before committing to making their own videos.

The Meta Quest 3 has been out for just a couple of weeks, and one of the aspects of the VR device that we noticed pop up often in our review roundup is now getting addressed in a software update.

The update to build 59.0 is bringing a few features to the Quest 3, including the ability to get a bit more battery life out of the device. Noted in almost reviews of the Quest 3 is the lack of improvement to battery life over previous models, with about 2 hours of battery life with continuous use. The new update offers a Battery Saver mode, which extends the headset’s battery life at the expense of lowered graphical settings.

The full list of features the update brings to the Quest 3 (as well as some updates for other models) can be found here.

Other features brought to the Quest 3 with build 59.0 include Suggested Boundary, which saves time by suggesting a boundary in the space around you when the device boots up, Assisted Space Setup, which scans the local environment to automatically fill in obstacles so you don’t have to do it manually, improvements to hand tracking, and additional shortcuts.
