WATCH: Meta Quest 3 teardown

Improvements abound, but needing to remove fifty screws for access to the battery is a headache

Dubbed “the year of virtual reality,” 2023 has been headlined by talk of the Meta Quest 3 and the Apple Vision Pro. While the latter isn’t to be released until sometime early next year, the former has just hit the market, and reviewers and repair experts are diving into the device.

iFixit has released their teardown video of Meta’s latest flagship VR device, and the results are a bit mixed. Meta seems to really be pushing for performance with the Quest 3, arguably at the expense of improved battery life. That said, the Quest 3’s components point to a considerable upgrade over the Quest 2. iFixit also acknowledges that the company has made an effort to make the Quest 3 more repairable, especially when compared to the Quest Pro, which they deemed “largely unfixable.” Unfortunately, that doesn’t mean the Quest 3 is easy to repair. The repair gurus point to the fifty screws that need to be removed before the battery becomes accessible, as well as joysticks in the device’s controllers that are prone to drift, as pain points.
