RENO, NV, January 8, 2008 – New Years revelers who rang in 2008 from the comfort of their own homes received a larger-than-life perspective of Nevada‘s annual “New Year’s Eve Celebrations” party as KRNV-TV News 4 took its decade long history of live coverage to new heights by broadcasting it in full HD using an array of RF Central microwave equipment.
As the only Reno, Nevada broadcaster to date with HD news capability, KRNV-TV covered the one-hour festivities in high definition by employing two RF Central CMT-II’s COFDM camera-mounted transmitters, one RFX-PHT-II portable high-power transmitter and three RFX-RMR-II COFDM rack-mount receivers. Cameras were deployed on top of the 24-floor Circus-Circus Casino-Hotel where they were responsible for capturing KRNV-TV‘s two-member anchor team and the fireworks show that ignited over the city. Additional wireless cameras roved throughout the street for crowd coverage, then transmitted to the receivers located on top of the casino, where the signal was mixed and switched.
Events of this size and scope typically present tremendous cabling and infrastructure challenges. David Feher, director of engineering for Sunbelt Communications, parent company of KRNV-TV News 4, says that RF Central was chosen because it had the best equipment for overcoming such obstacles and that its pristine video and transport system made those worries a thing of the past. “RF Central combines ‘top-drawer‘ equipment with incredible tech support that offers operational, technical and cost-effective benefits across the board,” says Feher.
“The challenge up until now has always been the need to run extensive cabling to the general location of the cameras,” explains Feher. “However, RF Central‘s capabilities in delivering HDSDI with embedded audio provided us with a solution. Its products and wireless features allow tremendous flexibility and seamless transmission. Our roving cameras were able to move freely among crowds and at various locations without ever loosing one single pixel throughout the broadcast, even in cases where we were out of “line of sight” to the receivers. In addition, RF Central gear proved to be highly durable, withstanding cold temperatures and windy conditions.”
