Dolby Vision 2 can work on current UHD Blu-ray players, the company confirmed, but there is a catch. In speaking to TechRadar, Dolby explained that since Dolby Vision 2’s metadata can be transmitted over HDMI, existing player should be able to support it. However, a software update would most likely be needed to prepare current players for the upcoming format.
“While we wouldn’t need any new hardware for those devices to have the optimal behavior for Dolby Vision 2, they would need a software update to make sure they’re configured correctly,” Jonas Klittmark, director of business strategy at Dolby Labs told TechRadar.
As many manufacturers have already announced that they are ceasing support for physical disc players, this means such an update could be unlikely. In a statement to TechRadar, Sony confirmed that it has no current plans to provide such an update for its Blu-Ray players to enable Dolby Vision 2 support.
