Microsoft has unceremoniously axed the HoloLens 2, the company’s enterprise-focused AR device. First reported by UploadVR, Microsoft has been communicating to its partners that those interested in the device should purchase one now, as no replacement is currently planned. The company has stated that it will continue to supply the device with “updates to address critical security issues and software regressions” through 2027, whereas all support for the HoloLens 2 will cease in 2028.

Additionally, all support for the first-generation HoloLens, which as been out of production since 2018, will end December 10, 2024. While there were rumors of an upcoming HoloLens 3, plans were cancelled for the device in 2022 due to the company’s restructuring. Microsoft had a hold on the enterprise market, with the HoloLens being used in medical and even military applications. The platform’s demise may mark an opportunity for competitors like Apple and Magic Leap to seize the gap in the market.
